How to Fix Blurry Pictures for Free

Free options

Updated October 2026

You can fix a mildly blurry picture for free. On a phone, Google Photos has a free Unblur tool for Android and iPhone. In a browser, Fotor's online blur remover is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. On a computer, GIMP's free Sharpen (Unsharp Mask) filter works without AI. No tool can rebuild detail that heavy blur wiped out.

Which free option helps depends on the kind of blur and the device you are on. Below is what each one does for free, where its limits start, and the steps for the web, phones and computers.

We make Jobim, which is on this list. It is free only for 3 starter credits, and we say so below. Facts about other tools come from their own pages and App Store listings as of October 2026. We did not run the same photos through every tool, so this compares what each one offers free, not output quality.

Try Jobim on a blurry photo

Run the Photo Enhancer and compare before and after. Free to download on iPhone, with starter credits.

Match the fix to the blur

  • Slight softness. From a smudged lens, light zoom or compression. Any sharpening tool, AI or not, usually helps.
  • Motion blur. Streaks in one direction. AI unblur tools can improve mild cases. Plain sharpening rarely does.
  • Missed focus. The background is sharp and the face is not. AI tools rebuild some detail, but they are guessing at the features.
  • Small or low resolution. The photo is sharp but tiny or pixelated. An upscaler suits this better than an unblur tool.

JobimiPhone appFree download. New accounts get 3 starter credits, and the Photo Enhancer shows 1 credit per photo.Unless you subscribe, saved images carry a small Made with Jobim watermark. How we chose: free or free-to-try tools for each kind of device (web browser, phone and computer), where we could read the free terms on the provider's own page or App Store listing. Ratings are US App Store figures as of October 2026. For iPhone-only options, including the free sliders in the Photos app, see our guide to unblurring a photo on iPhone.

Fix a blurry picture online for free

  1. Open Fotor's unblur image page in any browser.
  2. Upload the photo. Fotor lists JPG, JPEG, WebP, PNG, HEIC and HEIF.
  3. Download the result and compare it with the original at full size.
  4. If you need a bigger file, note that 4x high-resolution downloads need Fotor Pro.

Online tools upload your photo to the provider's servers. Read the privacy policy before you upload a private or family photo.

Fix a blurry picture on Android or iPhone for free

Start with Google Photos. Open the photo, tap Edit and look for Unblur. Google says availability varies by device, so it may not appear on older or low-memory phones.

Snapseed is the free manual option on both platforms. Use its Details tool, which the listing says brings out surface structures in images. Apply it gently, because strong sharpening adds halos and grain.

On iPhone, the Photos app's own Sharpness and Definition sliders also help with slight softness, and a Live Photo may hold a sharper frame. Our iPhone unblur guide has those steps.

Fix a blurry picture on a computer for free

  1. Download GIMP from gimp.org and open the photo.
  2. Choose Filters, then Enhance, then Sharpen (Unsharp Mask).
  3. Adjust Amount for strength and Radius for how far the sharpening reaches from each edge. Raise Threshold to keep smooth areas such as skin and sky from turning grainy.
  4. Export a copy and keep the original file.

For a photo that is sharp but small, Upscayl enlarges it with AI on your own computer. Its FAQ is clear that it does not fix motion blur or missed focus, so use it only for resolution problems.

When free tools are not enough

Free tools are limited in size, number or device. Fotor's free download is not the 4x version, Google Photos Unblur depends on your phone, and AI apps cap free use. For a few photos that matter, an app with starter credits or a trial lets you check the result before paying. On iPhone, Jobim's 3 starter credits cover about three photos; after that, expect to buy a credit pack or subscribe. Unless you subscribe, saved images carry a small watermark, and the paywall shows current prices.

Some blur cannot be fixed by any tool. If a face is a smear, AI produces a plausible face, not the real one. That can be fine for a keepsake, but not for anything where accuracy matters.

Frequently asked questions

How can I fix a blurry picture for free?

For mild blur, try Google Photos Unblur on your phone or Fotor's free online blur remover. For manual control, Snapseed on a phone or GIMP on a computer sharpens for free. Heavy blur will not come back fully with any tool.

Can I remove blur from a photo online for free without a watermark?

Yes. Fotor's page says its online blur remover is free, needs no sign-up, and downloads have no watermark. Its 4x high-resolution downloads need Fotor Pro.

What is the best free app to unblur photos?

Google Photos, where Unblur is free on supported Android phones and iPhones. Snapseed is the best free manual editor. AI apps such as Unblur and Jobim let you try them free but limit free use.

Can you unblur an image without AI?

Partly. Sharpening tools such as GIMP's Unsharp Mask and Snapseed's Details tool increase edge contrast, which helps slight softness. They cannot reverse strong motion blur or missed focus.
