How to Unblur a Photo on iPhone

iPhoneFree options first

Updated October 2026

You can unblur a photo on iPhone for free in the Photos app: tap Edit, tap Adjust, then use adjustments such as Sharpness and Definition (names can vary by iOS version). That only helps with mild softness. For a photo that was blurred by movement or missed focus, first try picking a different frame if it is a Live Photo, then use a dedicated unblur app.

No tool can bring back detail that was never recorded. How much you can recover depends on the kind of blur, so start by working out which one you have.

We make Jobim, one of the apps covered below. The built-in options come first because they cost nothing, and we say where each app falls short.

First, work out which kind of blur you have

  • Slight softness. Everything is a little soft, usually from a smudged lens, heavy zoom or compression. This is the easiest case and the Photos sliders often fix it.
  • Motion blur. Streaks in one direction because you or the subject moved. Mild cases improve with AI apps. Heavy streaking does not come back.
  • Missed focus. The camera focused on the background and the face is soft. Sharpening helps a little; AI apps can rebuild some detail but will be guessing.
  • Small or compressed. The photo is sharp but tiny, or was squeezed by a messaging app. This is really a resolution problem, and upscaling works better than sharpening.

Option 1: the Photos app (free, already on your phone)

  1. Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
  2. Tap Adjust, then swipe through the settings. Adjustments such as Sharpness, Definition and Noise Reduction can help; names can vary by iOS version.
  3. Select Sharpness and drag the slider up a little.
  4. If your iOS version has Definition, try it for extra edge contrast. Use Noise Reduction, if available, to calm grain the sharpening added.
  5. Tap Done. To undo your edits later, open the edited photo, tap More, then Revert to Original.

These sliders increase edge contrast. They make a photo look crisper, but they do not recover lost detail, and pushing them too far leaves halos and grain. Apple's editor gives you sliders here rather than an AI deblur button.

Option 2: rescue a Live Photo by choosing a sharper frame

If the photo has the Live icon, the camera recorded a short clip around the shot, and a neighboring frame may be sharper than the one it picked. Apple's steps: open the Live Photo, tap Edit, tap the Live button, drag the white frame marker to a sharper moment, tap Make Key Photo, then tap Done.

Apple notes that editing a Live Photo in a third-party app can lose its Live effects, so pick the frame first and run any app afterwards.

Option 3: an app built for unblurring

When the sliders are not enough, an app can do more. Prices and ratings below are from each app's App Store page as of October 2026.

How to unblur a photo with Jobim

  1. Open Jobim and choose Photo Enhancer.
  2. Pick the blurry photo from your library. Start from the largest copy you have, not a screenshot.
  3. Check the credit cost on the screen. The enhancement tools show 1 credit per photo.
  4. Run the enhancement and compare the result with the original using the before and after view.
  5. Save it. Free accounts get a small Made with Jobim watermark on saved images; subscribers do not.

New accounts get 3 starter credits, which covers about three photos if each costs 1 credit. After that you need a credit pack or a subscription; the paywall shows current prices and any trial.

What no app can fix

If a face is smeared beyond recognition, an AI app produces a sharper face that is plausible, not the real one. That is fine for a keepsake and wrong for anything where accuracy matters, such as a document or evidence.

To avoid the problem next time: wipe the lens, tap the face to set focus (touch and hold until AE/AF Lock appears to lock it), and hold still for a moment after the shutter.

Frequently asked questions

Can you unblur a photo on iPhone for free?

Yes, within limits. The Photos app has free adjustment sliders such as Sharpness, Definition and Noise Reduction (names can vary by iOS version), and Snapseed is a free editor with a Details tool. Both add crispness but cannot rebuild a badly blurred face. AI apps do more, but most cap the free use.

Why do my iPhone photos look blurry?

The usual causes are a smudged lens, movement during the shot, focus landing on the wrong thing, heavy digital zoom, low light and compression from messaging apps. Check the lens first.

Can AI unblur a very blurry face?

It can make the face look sharp, but where the blur erased the features, the AI fills in plausible ones. Treat the result as a reconstruction, not a record of what the person looked like.

Does unblurring lower the quality of the photo?

Heavy sharpening can add halos and grain. Work on a copy, keep the original, and compare before and after at full size.
